CASTELLO DI MELETO

The first accounts relating to Meleto date back to the eleventh century, at which time it was a property of the Benedictine monks. Subsequently it became the property of a certain “Guardellotto”, a member of a local feudal family, whom Frederick I Barbarossa dispossessed of his properties, giving them to the Ricasoli-Firidolfi family.
The family branch of Firidolfi da Meleto originated here. The name “Meleto in Chianti” was first included in the “Libro degli Estimi” (Book of surveying) of the Florentine Guelphs as property of Firidolfi family in 1256.
Its location, set between the Republics of Siena and Florence, ensured that the Castle was the background of many wars between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, one of which was the second Aragonese invasion of Chianti in 1478 when it was occupied by enemy troops, and during the Medici War, in 1529, when it was besieged by the Senesi militia.

Castello di Meleto is a small village where is possible to sleep in the castle or in one of the six beautiful houses, painstakingly restored in 2000, that preserve them rustic Tuscan style.
Each house has a private garden or terrace that overlooks the countryside surrounded by green vineyards and olive groves.

The apartments
An idyllic spot, once upon a time reserved only to noble Tuscan families, now open to you. Meleto Castle, a Florentine fortress against attacks from Siena, belonged to the Ricasoli family. In 1968 the family sold the whole property (about 1,000 hectares) to the Società Viticola Toscana SpA, the current owner.
Set high on the hill in the center of the property, the Castle fortress seems to survey the whole farm. The farmhouses, which were renovated in 1998, are perfect for your family holidays. Set alongside the Castle and fortress walls, where once stood small farm buildings, or further away so you can enjoy a view of Castle in the distance.
Each part of the house has a terrace or garden for you to lounge outdoors. A summer pool is located nearby where you can take a refreshing dip.

APARTMENTS LIMONAIA 1 AND 2
The Limonaia 1 and Limonaia 2 houses are set next to the castle fortress, facing south-west. They have a sitting room with a kitchen and a large double room. The sitting room has two sofa beds, one per person, and a satellite TV.

APARTMENTS LIMONAIA 3
Limonaia 3 is a small, two-floor house located at the end of the castle wall, just 50 meters from the pool. It has a sitting room with kitchenette, a bedroom, a bathroom with a shower and a private garden just 50 meters from the pool.

APARTMENTS TERRAZZE 1 AND 2
The Terrazze are two renovated farmhouses, set side by side next to the fortress wall. Below the wall, just one hundred meters away, is the summer pool surrounded by lush greenery.
The Terrazze 1 and Terrazze 2 apartments have a large typical sitting room, a kitchen and a bathroom with a shower, and are equipped with air conditioning, satellite TV. The mezzanine has an arcade and the master bedroom. The sitting room has a sofa bed for two.

THE LOGGIA
The Loggia is a small two-floor house which was once the home of the farm managers. It is situated just past the Castle fortress, about 150 meters from the pool.
The upper floor has a large sitting room with a practical kitchenette and a loggia with terrace and garden, satellite TV. The lower floor has two bedrooms, one master bedroom and one with two beds, a bathroom with a shower. Terrace and private parking space.

THE VIGNANOVA
Vignanova is a detached single-floor house. It can accommodate up to 6 people and is composed of the following:
Sitting-dining room with kitchenette;
2 master bedrooms with 2 private bathrooms;
1 room with two beds and 2 private bathroom and independent entrance facing the farmyard;
Air conditioning;
Satellite TV.
From the house terrace you have a spectacular view of the Castle.

THE CASANUOVA
A lovely Renaissance-style farmhouse, built around the rustic farmyard, with a lovely view of Meleto Castle, the vale of the Massellone torrent and the medieval town of Vertine.
Casanuova has been fully renovated and turned into a prestigious residence, with 4 large apartments equipped with every modern convenience, satellite TV included. Some lodgings have air conditioning, a whirlpool bath and a fireplace in the sitting room.
The room are furnished in the traditional Tuscan style, simple yet elegant, with beamed ceilings and terracotta floors. Guests who love traditional cuisine will find a large wood-burning oven which is located next to the farmyard where they can prepare traditional Tuscan dishes.
The large garden beckons you to soak up the sun: a captivating spot where you can spend a few days surrounded by the unspoiled Tuscan countryside, a starting point for long strolls among cypress trees, vineyards and olive groves, junipers and Scotch brooms.

In the old watchtower or with a view of the herb garden, with a soft four-poster bed or a queen bed… Select one of the six rooms in the Castle or the four double rooms in the Canonica for your stay. Breakfast is included with all the B&B rooms in the Castle and the Farmhouse, and takes place in front of a large medieval fireplace in the old Farm kitchen, located on the first floor of the Castle.
Your stay can be an opportunity to take part in farm activities and visit old underground cellar, the Castle’s crowning glory. In the wine shop, set at the end of a path in the castle vaults, you can taste a remarkable Chianti Classico or purchase a few bottles of precious Vinsanto DOC or some traditional organic Extra Virgin Olive oil, brightly colored and with a fruity flavor.

For guests of Castello di Meleto only, open from May to October, from 8:00am to 8:00pm, there are 2 wonderful infinity pools furnished with free of charge beach umbrellas and deck-chairs.
The first one is located very close to the main castle garden and the second one, with saltwater, in front of the villa Casanova.

At the beginning of the road leading to the Castle, located just 500 meters away you will find “La Fornace di Meleto” Restaurant: it offers delicious and savory traditional Tuscan dishes, such as pici (local pasta), Florentine steak and Tiramisù dessert!
The atmosphere is charming and cozy, the restaurant has a ample parking lot and a inviting patio. During the summer season is open every day for lunch and dinner.

CEREMONIES
A small private chapel which faces the yard in front of the Castle and seats approximately 20 people, is at your disposal for a symbolic religious wedding.

For larger groups of guests, the Parish of Santa Maria a Spaltenna is a Romanesque church open for worship, located only 2 km from the Castle and set in a lovely natural landscape owned by us.

Religious or symbolic ceremonies may also take place in the lovely gardens overlooking the Siena countryside or in the Castle rooms.
Those who desire a Civil ceremony may go to the City Halls of Gaiole in Chianti, only 2 km from the Castle, of Radda or Castellina in Chianti, respectively 10 and 20 km away and lastly Siena’s Town Hall Palazzo, in the extraordinary setting of the Piazza del Campo!

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR GUESTS
Borgo del Castello offers accommodations for up to 60 people in double rooms. Our guests can make use of our two infinity pools, a restaurant located just 500 meters away and a wine shop.

The Castle provides Wi-Fi internet connection in the common areas: the reception and the meeting room.
